Ashamed Soldier

Peter joined the army when he was eighteen, rift gold
and for several months he was taught how to be a good soldier. He did quite well in everything except shooting. One day he and his friends were practicing their shooting, and all of them were doing quite well except Peter. After he had shot at the target nine times and had not hit it once,
the officer who was trying to teach the young
soldiers
to shoot said, You're quite hopeless, Peter! Don't waste your last bullet too! Go behind that wall and shoot yourself with it!

Peter felt ashamed. He went behind the wall, rift gold and a few seconds later the officer and the other young soldiers heard the sound of a shot.

Heavens! the officer said. Has that silly man really shot himself?

He ran behind the wall anxiously, but Peter was all right. I'm sorry, sir, he said, but I missed again.

Saving Lives

At a pre-med university in St. Louis, we had to take a difficult class in physics. One day the professor was discussing a particularly complicated concept. A student rudely interrupted to ask Why do we have to learn this stuff?

To save lives. The professor responded quickly and continued the lecture. A few minutes later, the same student spoke up again. So how does physics save lives? he persisted. It usually keeps the idiots like you out of medical school, replied the professor.

Film and Cinema: Sets and Techniques

During the early years of silent cinema until around 1909, interiors for film sets resembled theatrical and vaudeville stages with painted backdrops and limited three-dimensional representation. Action was depicted at long-shot distance immediately in front of the backdrop creating a shallow playing area. The earliest narrative films consisted of a single shot of actions on a stage and spectators were positioned in relation to the action as though viewing a traditional theatrical presentation. After 1911 the development of the American film industry in Hollywood as one based primarily on considerations of narrative storytelling over the esthetics of form, meant that a preoccupation of early studio set technicians and cinematographers, designers, producers and artistic directors was a drive toward greater narrative progression and the realistic representation of action on screen.

Innovations in editing through the use of the fast film stocks characteristic of silent cinema had two profound cinematic effects.

First, continuity editing, rift gold as it came to be known, meant that scenes could be broken up into discrete shots, creating a break from theatrical conventions and the creation of a truly cinematic space. The standard continuity technique is shot-reverse shot and crosscutting. The former, used in filming twoway conversation, works in conjunction with editing and camera angles in order to produce the effect of seamless movement between speaking characters. Shots are taken from one character’s point of view or over the shoulder and intercut with those from the other person. Crosscutting, pioneered and refined in the work of D. W. Griffith, refers to the alteration of shots, this time between scenes. It implies multiple actions in different locations that are occurring simultaneously. Techniques of continuity editing, in hiding the constructed nature of the action represented on screen, produces a second cinematic effect contributing to the establishment of the particular ‘‘look’’ or esthetic of American film. The codes and practices of editing have remained largely consistent with these early innovations and have been little affected by subsequent developments in technology. This emphasis on narrative continuity led to the early identification of American film with realism. Cinematic realism holds that what is represented on screen accurately reproduces that part of the real world to which it refers. Thus, American film through the use of continuity editing techniques introduced a realism of cinematic representation and positioned film spectators close to the action. This reversed technique that led to the distancing of the audience from the spectacle, common to European formalism and experimental cinema, offering audiences the illusion that they are watching a seamlessly coherent and wholly realistic representation of reality. The realistic codes of American cinema also demanded the representation of three-dimensionality, the cinema frame as a window on the world extending beyond the limits of the frame into space off-screen. To this end developments intended to produce realistic cinematic effects occurred in liaison by cinematographers and art directors working with miniatures and techniques of composite photography such as glass shots and mattes. Glass shots worked to give cinematic depth through the technique of shooting through a clear pane of glass containing either a painted or photographic image. An early example of special effects, glass shots were used widely in the 1920s and 1930s and featured famously and extensively in the work of M. C. Cooper and E. B. Schoedsack in King Kong (1933).

By the 1920s, depth and three dimensionality was also being added to set design through modifications to stage architecture. The arrangements of props, increasing use of multiple room stage constructions, artificial lighting effects rift gold and careful construction of mis-en-sce´ne were all directed at creating the sensory illusion of depth and the participation of the audience in the screen space. Early attempts to represent the illusion of depth graphically were most convincing on location filming but proved incongruous when edited beside the shallow effects offered through traditional stage setting. However, developments as early as 1908 ushered forward techniques of deep focus cinematography through modifications to lens lengths and the use of wide angles, narrow apertures, and the manipulation of lighting, and provided for multiple planes of action area. As a technique of shooting, deep focus ensured that realism in depth could be achieved by allowing a number of actions to take place in multiple planes simultaneously during a single shot. Deep focus cinematography worked in combination with the development of techniques to enhance depth in set design. The illusion of depth offered through deep focus cinematography quickly became both the norm and the signature of American narrative cinema, though it was not fully realized until the pioneering work of Gregg Toland in the 1930s.

Toland, considered the greatest cinematographer of his age, experimented with arc lamps, wide angles, lens coating and fast film to produce a distinctive deep focus impression. The culmination of his work can be seen in Citizen Kane (1941) where Toland creates enormous and sumptuous spaces that achieve both great height as well as great depth. Toland’s greatest innovation in Citizen Kane is considered to be his use of unusually long takes, using static cameras to achieve incredible shot depth of long duration. Toland’s use of long takes added to the canon of deep focus techniques and was later developed in conjunction with the Garrett Brown’s Steadicam to provide both an unusually long depth perception coupled with unerring rapid movement in The Shining (1980).

Contemporaneously, developments in special effects techniques from the pioneering work done in the 1920s and 1930s have become the modern signature of Hollywood productions. Common photographic techniques such as fades, wipes, and dissolves have been augmented by techniques such as rear projection in which live action is combined with painted backdrops or miniatures. Rear projection was used to fantastic effect by George Lucas in Star Wars (1977), the film considered to have reinvented the effects-led blockbuster film. Since then, digitization; that is, the use of electronically programmed motion control and computer graphics in which the fantastic is able to be represented realistically, has become ubiquitous in Hollywood productions in the wake of Steven Spielberg’s breakthrough work of Jurassic Park in 1993.

Taken together, continuity editing, depth of field cinematography, composite special effects photography, increasingly sophisticated set design, and staging through mis-en-sce´ne, have each contributed to giving visual clarity and realism to multiple planes of action simultaneously. This has achieved the cinematic effect of greatly enhancing spectator perception of screen space by extending it forward toward the audience and approximating what the French theorist Andre´ Bazin, referring admiringly to American film production, called ‘‘total cinema.’’

Is It Time to Kill the Mortgage Interest Tax Deduction?

With proposals from both President Obama and Republican leaders to broaden the tax base, it seems likely that some cherished income tax deductions may be reduced or even eliminated, and one leading candidate for the chopping block is the deduction for mortgage interest.

Though many economists argue the mortgage interest deduction doesn't work properly, most Americans don't agree. A poll by USA Today and Gallup published Friday showed that 61% of Americans oppose eliminating the mortgage interest tax deduction to either lower the overall tax rate or as a way to reduce the federal deficit. In fact, the poll showed that a majority of Americans were against eliminating any tax deductions.

But both the Obama deficit reduction plan and the plan put forward by U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) would require some tax changes. "It's hard to imagine you could do a lot of base broadening while leaving the mortgage deduction completely untouched," says Alan D. Viard, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. "I think it is fair to say that each of them would end up having to do something with the mortgage deduction if they really wanted to carry through on what they are promising."

According to the Treasury Department, the budget for 2012 projects that the mortgage interest deduction will cost the budget around $100 billion. TERA Gold But Eric Toder, co-director of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center in Washington, estimates that elimination of the deduction would only generate $70 billion to $80 billion, because some people would pay off their mortgages early if the law is changed.

"Most of the deduction is going to the people who are itemizing -- relatively high-income people who would be home owners anyway," Toder says. "People on the margin -- who might be thinking about renting or buying -- can't use the deduction."

AEI's Viard says the deduction actually "encourages people to own bigger homes or more expensive homes. It is hard to see the public purpose in that objective."

Who Gains the Most From the Deduction?
There is no dispute that the deduction benefits higher-income earners more than lower- and middle-income Americans. If you're in the 35% tax bracket, you get $35 of savings for every $100 of mortgage interest you pay, but if you're in the 15% tax bracket, you only get $15. So it's hard to claim that the deduction is targeted at people who are on the fence on the question of buying a home vs. renting.

Check out the latest real estate newsBut a counter-argument comes from Robert Dietz, an economist with the National Association of Home Builders, who says that elimination of the mortgage deduction would have "a huge impact" on first-time home buyers.

In the early years of a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage, Dietz notes, the largest part of each payment goes directly to interest -- only a little goes to paying down the loan's principal. As a result, he says, recent first-time buyers are the ones for whom interest makes up the largest share of the household budget, and it is they who would be hurt the most by an elimination of the mortgage interest deduction.

Dietz maintains that 70% of the benefits from the reduction in tax liability go to people earning between $50,000 and $200,000 a year. RIFT Platinum Eliminating the mortgage deduction "would have the effect of delaying the home ownership status of some people, as they would have to accumulate a larger down payment before they became home owners," he says.

Toder says he doubts that elimination of the deduction would divert potential homeowners into becoming renters. "I think what it would probably do is reduce the amount of money you would spend on a house," he says.

And, he notes, rift gold if there are no transition rules, current homeowners could get squeezed painfully if the deduction is eliminated while they have to carry on making the same old mortgage payments.

An Alternate Proposal

One plan that is gaining currency was suggested by President Obama's budget reform commission, which was headed by former Sen. RIFT Platinum Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.) and Erskine Bowles, former chief of staff to President Clinton.
They proposed to eliminate the mortgage interest deduction and replace it with a 12% credit for interest paid. While that would be less than many taxpayers now receive for the current credit, lower-income earners such as seniors would be entitled to claim the new credit even if they don't file for itemized deductions.

The current limit for the proposed deduction is mortgages on $1 million homes. Rift Gold Viard says by making interest credit available to people who don't itemize deductions and placing a limit on the dollar value of the house, it wouldn't encourage people to buy more expensive houses.

"This credit is much more focused on what may be the legitimate goal of encouraging home ownership instead of this clearly illegitimate goal, which I am not sure anybody has identified, of encouraging bigger houses," Viard says.

Or perhaps we can eliminate mortgage interest from consideration altogether. After all, Canada and Britain don't allow it as a tax deduction, and the real estate markets are booming in both countries.

Britney Spears and Boyfriend Hit the Beach in Birthday Getaway

Britney Spears and boyfriend Jason Trawick ended a tumultuous week filled with abuse allegations by spending a few romantic days in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

"They suntanned and did a lot of relaxing and decompressing," RIFT Platinum says a PEOPLE source. "They seemed very much in love."

Trawick reportedly set up the getaway, timed around Spears' 29th birthday on Dec. 2. rift gold They were spotted cavorting hand-in-hand on the beach over the weekend.

Of course, this all comes on the heels of an explosive report by Star magazine, RIFT Platinum which claims to have tapes of phone conversations between Spears and her ex-husband, Jason Alexander. Rift Gold On the tapes, a voice attributed to Spears says Trawick "beat on" her.

The pop star's camp denied the report, calling it "laughable," TERA Gold and on her birthday, Spears told her detractors to "kiss my lily white southern Louisiana a**!"

Why Eating Healthy Will Give You a Positive Feeling About Yourself

Overview
Food serves the most basic purpose of supplying your body with energy to function. However, the way in which food is able to complete this task involves complex processes carried out through the metabolism of foods in your digestive system. Food is broken down into smaller particles that distribute nutrients throughout your body to aid in normal organ and brain functions. Eating healthy not only allows you to survive but to also feel emotionally well.

Digestion and Nutrient Absorption
The digestive system is the gate-keeper that allows your body to get the most from food. After you chew and swallow, food travels through the digestive tract and awaits further breakdown in the stomach. Rift Gold In your stomach, food mixes with digestive juices and is ushered along to the intestines. Your intestines complete the final breakdown then distribute the small nutrient molecules to various parts of your body and eliminate food waste from your colon. This important process must occur before you can reap the plethora of benefits from food. However, unhealthy foods that do not digest well get stalled in this complex process and may result in you feeling too full, irritated or stressed.

5 Foods you must not eat: Cut down a bit of stomach fat every day by never eating these 5 foods. Naviibk.com

Mood Chemicals
The brain is packed with numerous neurotransmitters, important chemicals that relay signals throughout your body, for tasks including movement, thoughts and emotions. The main neurotransmitters involved in mood are serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine and acetylcholine. Certain foods contain nutrients that are precursors to these important neurotransmitters. Once you eat a healthy meal with these foods, any one or all of these mood chemicals are activated. The key is designing a mood boosting diet with fresh foods rather than quick processed junk foods that elevate your mood initially but cause a sugar crash.

Energy and Alertness
Dopamine and norepinephrine boost your alertness, enhance concentration and energize your mind. These chemicals are precursors in protein containing foods including meat, dairy and beans. Once you digest protein it is metabolized into the amino acid tyrosine, RIFT Platinum which increases the production of dopamine and norepinephrine in your brain. Choose lean protein sources to reduce the amount of saturated fat in your body, which can promote lethargy from poor digestion. Energize the start of your day with a scrambled egg and one glass of low-fat milk.

Relax and De-stress
Serotonin promotes tranquil mood and positive perceptions. Carbohydrates are a form of sugar that triggers the release of insulin into your blood stream. During digestion the insulin release activates the precursor tryptophan, which is then converted to serotonin. rift gold But choose your carbohydrates carefully because simple sugars from foods like cookies, cake or candy may give a mood boost for the moment but the rapid blood sugar increase is followed by a sugar crash. Complex carbohydrates maintain your serotonin levels for longer periods so you can feel relaxed. Choose whole grain breads or wheat pasta for a serotonin surge. If you pair your protein with complex carbohydrates, eat the protein first then the carbohydrate to prolong the feel good effects.

Healthy Eating Tips
A diet rich in B-vitamins can help you maintain the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is important for mood, memory, learning and energy. RIFT Platinum Fresh vegetables like broccoli, salad greens or sweet potatoes are good additions to supply you with acetylcholine. Whole grains and lean meat are also B-vitamin sources. Limit your daily caffeine intake to two cups or less so you get a mood boost without the accompanying caffeine withdrawal. TERA Gold When you feel anxious try tuna on whole wheat instead of a bag of potato chips. Eat fresh fruits as snacks in between meals for a natural sugar boost and add fish twice a week to your diet to prevent mild depression, notes MayoClinic.com.

2011 NFL Draft: NFC West team

Arizona Cardinals
Draft buzz

The Cardinals need a quarterback, but it’s doubtful they take one high in the draft and questionable if they take one at all. The new starter is likely to come through free agency or a trade, and the coaching staff likes John Skelton as the backup. The Cardinals desperately need a pass rusher and would be thrilled to take Texas A&M OLB Von Miller if he were available at No. 5. If he’s gone, they’re open to trading down. They have many needs, and additional draft selections would be attractive.

Targeting

The Cardinals want an impact player in the first round, not one who needs to be developed. That means they likely won’t take Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert. Miller is a possibility here, but the expectation is that he will be gone. That might leave the team a choice between LSU CB Patrick Peterson and Georgia WR A.J. Green. Both players would make sense. Peterson can change a game as a defender and a returner. Green could be a replacement for Steve Breaston, who is not under contract in 2011. Larry Fitzgerald’s contract expires after the season. The Cardinals want to re-sign him, but if they can’t, Green would be insurance. The team has so many needs it could draft almost any position and shore up a weakness. The three interior offensive linemen are not under contract. The talent at tight end has been mediocre for years and could use an upgrade. The depth at defensive end isn’t great, and the club could use a big inside linebacker to help stop the run. Taking Illinois’ Martez Wilson in the second round or LSU’s Kelvin Sheppard in a later round would make sense.

Last word

“Listen, there is nothing wrong with information. There are enough people that don’t agree with what you do, or the calls that I make, so it is my chance to look at something you guys do and disagree with you. TERA Gold ‘God, that wasn’t a very good pick.’ Although I don’t have the forum to put it out there that you do.” — coach Ken Whisenhunt when asked if he looks at media mock drafts

St. Louis Rams
Draft buzz

The Rams claim they will stay true to their board and take the highest-rated player available regardless of position, with the only exception being quarterback, where they have Sam Bradford. Almost all teams give some variation of the "best player available" philosophy, RIFT Platinum but the Rams have needs in so many areas they can afford to truly do so, particularly in the early rounds. If the cluster of players the Rams think will be there at No. 14 begins to shrink, they may try to move up. Conversely, if that cluster remains intact, they may try to trade down a few spots.

Targeting

The biggest need positions are wide receiver, defensive tackle, outside linebacker, cornerback and safety. Alabama WR Julio Jones is the player the Rams hope remains available at No. 14. He would provide a big target and the speed to threaten defenses on the perimeter. rift gold If he's not there, Maryland's Torrey Smith and Kentucky's Randall Cobb could be options in Round 2. Minus Clifton Ryan and with Fred Robbins now 34, a starting-caliber defensive tackle is a must as well. Corey Liuget of Illinois would make a lot of sense in the first round if Jones were gone. There are plenty of second- and third-round options as well in Baylor’s Phil Taylor, North Carolina’s Marvin Austin and Clemson’s Jarvis Jenkins. The search for a starting weakside linebacker is trickier because there just aren't many true OLB candidates for a 4-3 scheme at the top of the draft. The best options appear to be North Carolina’s Bruce Carter, Washington’s Mason Foster and Ohio State’s Ross Homan. RIFT Platinum Carter and Foster are probably second-round types; Homan might be had in the third round. The Rams need another corner at worst to compete for the nickel back job, and they will be on the hunt for safety help in the middle rounds. And coach Steve Spagnuolo never turns down a chance to add a defensive end who can rush the passer.

Last word

"We're going to let the board dictate. We can't sit here and say, 'Well, Rift Gold we don't have to worry about taking this position because once free agency comes ... that position is pretty strong, we feel like we can get a guy there.' You can't operate that way. Who know what's going to happen?" — G.M. Billy Devaney

the fifth rookie

rift gold
As a rookie in the Atlantic City, N.J., Police department, I was assigned a beat on the boardwalk. Hardly a day went by when I didn't come upon a child who had become separated from his parents.
One afternoon, I spotted a small boy standing alone, obviously lost. I tried to gain his confidence - I took him to the nearest ice-cream stand and bought him a cone. Time passed with no sign of the boy's parents, so the next step was to call for a patrol car to take him to headquarters. I told the small fry to stay put while I went to the call box. When I returned, he was nowhere in sight.
Within minutes, the car arrived, and one of the patrolmen asked me where the child was. I felt stupid; it's humiliating to say you've lost a lost child. But I told the officers what had happened and gave a description of the boy. "What did you treat him?" asked one of the men. "An ice-cream cone. Why?" "Because," answered the officer, "that kid lives only a few blocks from here, and you've about the fifth rookie he's conned for a treat!"

MMA Top 10 Middleweights: Respect for Chael Sonnen

I didn't think Chael Sonnen was a serious threat to Anderson Silva, didn't think their fight would get out of the first round and didn't think Sonnen could even come close to backing up all that ridiculous trash talk he spewed in the run-up to their UFC 117 fight on Saturday night.

But while Silva did manage to pull off a fifth-round submission victory, I now believe Sonnen has to be considered the No. 2 middleweight in the world, and I also believe the next middleweight title fight should be Silva-Sonnen 2. No one had ever even come close to beating Silva in the UFC, and Sonnen had victory within his grasp on Saturday night. He deserves another chance.

You know Silva and Sonnen are the top two middleweights in the world. Find out about the rest of the Top 10 below.

(Editor's note: The individual fighter's ranking the last time we did middleweights are in parentheses.)

1. Anderson Silva (1): The champion had one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the sport in beating Sonnen, and he deserves a lot of credit for that. But it's also clear that there are weaknesses in Silva's game, and that a good wrestler can exploit those weaknesses. I'd pick Silva to win again in a rematch, but Sonnen showed that the gap between them is nowhere near as great as we all thought.

2. Chael Sonnen (4): Sonnen is now 25-11-1 in his MMA career, and seven of those 11 losses are by submission. That will always be his greatest weakness, and I think if there's a rematch Silva will probably win by submission again. But I hope Sonnen gets the chance to prove me wrong.

3. Jake Shields (2): For now I'm keeping Shields in my middleweight rankings even though the UFC plans to move him back down to welterweight. TERA Gold Shields left Strikeforce as its middleweight champion, and during the fourth round of Sonnen-Silva, I started thinking to myself that if Sonnen won, a Shields-Sonnen UFC middleweight title fight would make a lot of sense. Instead we'll soon see Shields back at 170 pounds, and we'll drop Shields from our middleweight Top 10.

4. Vitor Belfort (3): I'd love to watch Belfort fight Silva because I think the fight would be guaranteed fireworks, but on merit I'm not convinced that Belfort really deserves it. Belfort has only fought once since re-signing with the UFC a year ago, and although that one fight was a spectacular first-round knockout of Rich Franklin, it was at a catchweight of 195 pounds, and Belfort struggled even to make that weight. If I'm Joe Silva I tell Belfort he has to beat a Top 10 middleweight and then he can get the winner of the Silva-Sonnen rematch.

5. Demian Maia (5): Maia only needed half a round last year to get Sonnen to tap to a triangle choke, and that win looks a lot more impressive now that we've seen how dominant Sonnen can be on the ground. RIFT Platinum On the other hand, Maia looked significantly less impressive against Silva and Nate Marquardt than Sonnen did.

6. Nate Marquardt (6): After losing to Sonnen in February, Marquardt will try to bounce back against Rousimar Palhares in the main event of next month's Fight Night. That's a fight Marquardt should definitely win.

7. Dan Henderson (7): Much like Shields, I'm keeping Henderson in the middleweight class for now even though he's planning to move out of the class. (Shields beat Henderson at 185 pounds, and now Shields is moving down to 170 while Henderson is moving up to 205.) rift gold I think Henderson should have stayed at middleweight and fought in that Strikeforce middleweight tournament we've been hearing so much about, but instead we're probably going to see him take on Renato Sobral in a rematch of their 2000 fight in Japan.

8. Yushin Okami (9): A lot of people dislike Okami's fighting style, RIFT Platinum but I thought that his victory over Mark Munoz was a textbook-perfect example of the way to avoid takedowns and beat a great wrestler. Okami-Belfort for the No. 1 contender spot would make a lot of sense.

9. Jorge Santiago (10): American fans often overlook Santiago, the Sengoku champion, but his August 22 fight with Kazuo Misaki will air live on HDNet and will be worth staying up late or waking up early to watch.

10. Robbie Lawler (8): With Shields leaving and Henderson moving up, Lawler is the best middleweight Strikeforce has. Unfortunately, Rift Gold he's coming off a loss in a 195-pound catchweight fight and isn't in Strikeforce's middleweight title picture at the moment, but if Strikeforce ever gets its middleweight division sorted out, I expect Lawler to end up holding the belt.

LeAnn Rimes Responds to Shape Magazine Cover Controversy

One day after news broke that the editor-in-chief of Shape Magazine called LeAnn Rimes' October cover "a terrible mistake," the singer responded via her Twitter page.

On Thursday, Rift Gold it was reported that editor-in-chief Valerie Latona sent an email to subscribers apologizing for featuring LeAnn Rimes on the cover.

"You are all in good company... as you all agree Shape has made a terrible mistake in putting LeAnn Rimes on the cover," the editor wrote in the email. "Please know that our putting her on the cover was not meant to put a husband-stealer on a pedestal-but to show (through her story)... "

The 28-year-old singer wasted no time in responding, Tweeting, "Just so all my fans know, I'm getting to the bottom of this. RIFT Platinum It's the first I've heard of this. Shape is throwing me a party next week as a thank you and a congrats for being on their cover for the third time. I find this very contradictory." Rimes then Tweeted a photo of the invite to the event.

Later in the day, Rimes Tweeted a link to a new statement from editor-in-chief Latona. The editor wrote about her "personal letter" to subscribers, saying it was taken out of context. rift gold She also reveals only 40 out of 6 million subscribers complained about the Rimes cover. Regardless, she said she wanted to write a short note to those unhappy with the content.

"I don't want anyone to be unhappy--so I took the time to write a personal note to them, apologizing for not having someone on the cover they wanted to see and hoping to do right by them the next time. (I do this many times for all cover stars and you really can't ever please everyone all the time,)" she wrote.

Latona also says she stands behind her decision to use Rimes on the cover: RIFT Platinum "The bottom line is this: I stand by the fact that LeAnn's story is compelling--and her courage and strength in the face of so much adversity is compelling. That is why I put her on the cover of Shape for what is now the third time."

The Brewers played a pretty significant part in the streak: With two wins in the season-opening series in Baltimore and three more in this series, Rift Gold the Crew hung five losses on the Orioles during the drought, outscoring them by a combined total of 39-13.

Uganda’s ‘Walk To Work’ Protests Will Continue, says Activist

A Ugandan pressure group is vowing to defy President Museveni’s ban on protests against food and fuel price rises. They say they will continue their call to walk to work to protest deteriorating economic conditions, and to show solidarity with the poor.
Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni on Saturday warned he will not allow the protests, which began last week, to continue. According to Reuters, he said they would worsen the economic situation because businesses, fearing attacks on their vehicles, would be afraid to bring food and fuel into protesting urban areas. Museveni blames drought for the rising food prices and said international events had pushed up the price of oil needed to deliver goods.
“We were not waiting for President Museveni’s permission,” said Mathias Mpuuga, the Masaka Municipality member of parliament-elect and the coordinator for the pressure group, Activists for Change (A4C).
“It has never been part of our program to seek his permission and consent for us to protest,” he said.
Mr Mpuuga said Ugandans have a right to protest and “Ugandans have an obligation to demand of him [president Museveni] and his government to do what other governments do in times of crisis.”
He said he is not surprised by the president’s reaction. “I would have been surprised if his message was different,” he said, “but this is his usual intimidation trick.”
For the last so many years, he explained, “Uganda is a country of the law of the rulers and not the rule of law.”
Mpuuga said it’s the duty of all Ugandans to enforce the rule of law as government would not grant them freedoms unless they fight for them.
He said despite the police brutality last week on peaceful people walking to work, the ‘walk to work” campaign will continue.
“We will not do anything different. Tomorrow (Monday) we will walk to work but this time round the walk to work campaign will not be a preserve of the capital, Kampala, but will spread throughout the whole country.”
Mpuuga urged the president to address the concerns of the citizens instead of demonizing the opposition.
Prices have been rising after drought cut food output across Uganda, while higher global oil prices have increased transport costs, rift gold pushing up food prices further in urban areas.
The consumer price index jumped 4.1 percent in March from February, pushing the year-on-year inflation rate to 11.1 percent, the fifth straight rise.
Security forces on Thursday fired rubber bullets and teargas to disperse a crowd of more than 1,000 led by Dr Kiiza Besigye, rift gold Museveni's closest rival in February elections. Besigye was injured in the march to the center of Kampala after a rubber bullet struck his finger.
Protests were also reported in the town of Jinja in eastern Uganda, Masaka in south western Uganda, and Gulu to the north.
Museveni said protests will do nothing to reduce the cost of oil, and urged Ugandans to use fuel sparingly.

IS IT ART?

Paintings and power shovels, sonatas and submarines, dramas and dynamos -they all have one thing in common. They are fashioned by people. They are artificial, in contrast to everything that is natural – plants, animals, and minerals. The average 20th-century person would distinguish paintings, sonatas, and dramas as forms of art, while viewing power shovels, submarines, and dynamos as products of technology. This distinction, however, is a modern one that dates from an 18th-century point of view. In earlier times, the word “art” referred to any useful skill. Shoemaking, rift gold metalworking, medicine, agriculture, and even warfare, were all once classified as arts. They were equated with what are today called the fine arts -painting, sculpture, music, rift gold, architecture, literature, dance, and related fields. In that broader sense, art was defined as a skill in making or doing, based on true and adequate reasoning.

Satellite Spots Torched Sudanese Village

Satellite images of Sudan’s South Kordofan State indicate a village in the Nuba Mountains may have been the target of political violence.
The state is scheduled to hold a gubernatorial election in early May. Rival candidates have traded charges over attacks on the village that reportedly killed 20 people.
Nathanial Raymond, director of operations for the Satellite Sentinel Project at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, rift gold analyzed the images.

“What the images in our most recent report are showing is the apparent intentional burning of the town of el-Feid,” he said, “The home of Abdelaziz al-Hilu, who is the deputy governor of South Kordofan State and the representative of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in South Kordofan.”
The incumbent state governor, Ahmed Haroun, has been indicted by the International Criminal Court for, charged with war crimes in Darfur in western Sudan.
“What we see is clear evidence of intentional burning of approximately 356 structures. Many of them are likely civilian dwellings,” he said.
Telltale signs
Analysts looked for two specific pieces of evidence that the fires were intentionally set.
“One,” he said, “is the lack of intervening scorch marks between structures in the burned areas. And the second piece of evidence is the fact that you have some areas that are burned set far back from clusters of buildings that have also been burned. And what that means is that it is indicative of someone going from a house to another house and so forth, walking a distance and burning selectively.”
Hilu has said the attack on el-Feid was done by the northern-aligned Popular Defense Force, which is under Haroun’s command.
Raymond said, “At this point the lack of on-the-ground information makes that difficult for us to confirm. But what is clear is that whatever happened at el-Feid was intentional and destroyed a lot of structures in that village.”
Unable to confirm civilian casualties
“Satellite images can do a lot. But there are some things that on-the-ground reporting can only do, which is to develop basically a timeline of alleged events. What we can see is the aftermath. There needs to be a full and impartial investigation on the ground,” he said.
Satellite images also show evidence of burning in Um Barmbita, rift gold about 15 to 20 kilometers northwest of el-Feid. But analysts have not yet been able to confirm whether it, too, was intentional.
After studying the latest and past satellite images of violence in Sudan, Raymond said, “Sudan is on the knife’s edge…. These events in South Kordofan are disturbing and suggest the potential for further violence.”

Brewers 6, Astros 9

Win: Brandon Lyon (1-1)
Loss: Sean Green (0-1)

HR: Lee (2), Pence (3), Braun (7)

MVP: Prince Fielder (.551)
LVP: Sean Green (-.461)

Fangraphs Win Expectancy Graph

The Brewers kept coming close to winning, but just never could get over the hump. After Shaun Marcum gave up three runs in the first, RIFT Platinum the Brewers countered with a run of their own in the second. Houston then scored one more in the third to make the score 4-1, but the Brewers would score two runs in the bottom of the inning to come within a run. rift gold Then, in the seventh, the Astros scored two more runs after three consecutive hits with two outs. Once more in the bottom of the same inning, Milwaukee also did some damage, keeping the game within a run by scoring two of their own.

Then the bottom of the eighth happened.

Following a Yuni single, which is unlikely enough, the Astros had a bit of a defensive meltdown on the next play. Jonathan Lucroy laid down a poorly hit sacrifice bunt that Houston appeared to have a chance to get the lead runner on. RIFT Platinum Instead, Brett Wallace fielded the ball and promptly tripped over pitcher Mark Malancon. Instead of cutting his losses there, Wallace threw the ball away trying to get Lucroy at first, allowing Betancourt to reach third. So with runners on the corners and no outs down by one, the Brewers looked in pretty decent shape right?

Well, Erick Almonte then came up as the pinch hitter. After working the count a bit, he hit a soft bouncer to the left side of the infield. Rift Gold Instead of throwing to first or, even more likely, getting the double play, Houston SS Angel Sanchez threw home and managed to get Yuni in a rundown, during which Betancourt tried to wave Lucroy over to third to at least gain something positive from the gaff. Unfortunately, Lucroy ended up just standing between second and third base and getting in a rundown of his own after Yuni was tagged out. To top it off, Almonte almost got thrown out off of first for a triple play after Lucroy was tagged out. He wasn't, though, and Craig Counsell grounded out to end the inning.

Except none of that mattered, because Ryan Braun singled with an out in the ninth and Fielder drove him in with a double down the right field line. Braun ran like the dickens around the bases to reach home before the throw. The Brewers had a chance to win it in the ninth with the bases loaded, but failed to capitalize.

And that in turn allowed the other team to score two runs in the tenth inning on a ground rule double from Humberto Quintero of all people off of stupid Sean Green. Brandon Lyon--no, seriously, Brandon Lyon--then drove in a run as the Astros kept him in to work the bottom of the tenth after he had already pitched the ninth inning.

The Brewers had no answer in the tenth. What a rubbish recap to write.

Tomorrow is another day, and the Brewers will be playing again at 1:10 CT. We'll have the gamethread and pitching matchups and lineups and all that good stuff, just like normal.

She’s shaping up to be the next People’s Princess!

Just a week before her highly anticipated wedding, Kate Middleton was seen stepping out in London, RIFT Platinum England throwing out her rubbish! What Men Notice First—Yes, Even Before Breasts

Good news for those of us with lingerie drawers full of push-up bras! Rift Gold It’s not your cleavage he's looking at instead of your face...it's your hair! According to Glamour, a new survey found that what men really want is silky, healthy hair. The hard numbers:

74% of men indicated that they notice women because of their hair.

44% of men surveyed said that hair is the first thing they notice about a woman, more than her clothes (26%), legs (25%), or makeup (4%), RIFT Platinum and most men surveyed would be more likely to approach a woman at a bar with great hair than a woman wearing a low-cut shirt.
82% of men indicated that sexy hair is a key element to a woman's overall sex appeal.

60% of men surveyed say they would rather date a woman with great hair than a woman with big breasts.

78% of men surveyed consider healthy hair to be a turn-on.

But wait...I thought we were taught that we can have it all! Love and a career. Great hair and great boobs! Now we have to choose?

Led by Pantene, the survey is hardly impartial, but do men really care about hair this much? According to Steve Ward (of VH1 Tough Love fame) yes! "Anyone can wear a low-cut blouse, but not everyone can have great hair," he tells TalkingMakeup.com. rift gold Anyone! Steve can wear a low-cut blouse, I bet. 9 Surprising Things Men Think About Your Hair

Your hair also talks to Steve, and to all men. Says Steve: "Hair that is healthy and well-kept immediately signals to a man that you are responsible, classy, attentive, and take pride in your appearance and these are all characteristics that men look for in women." Responsible! RIFT Platinum Maybe your hair should have a resume. Besides, if good hair tells men that you are responsible and classy, what does bad hair tell them? (Sometimes mine says "I was eating Doritos earlier and got some crumbs in my hair.")

Ladies, what do you think: Does your guy really prefer your locks to everything else about you—maybe including your personality?—or does this study simplify their whims and preferences? (When asked for commentary, my boyfriend said "boooooobs," chugged a beeer, and refused to ask for directions.)

UFC 132 Fight Card: Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber

The UFC 132 fight card will be headlined by Dominick Cruz putting his bantamweight RIFT Platinum belt on the line against Urijah Faber on July 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Cruz (17-1)'s only career loss was a guillotine choke submission to Faber (25-4) at WEC 26 in March 2007. During the same time, Rift Gold a little animosity developed between them when Faber became irked after learning that Cruz would sign his name over Faber's face on the event posters. RIFT Platinum Cruz said it was not a shot at Faber, but instead was out of his frustration that Cruz was not on the poster even though he was fighting for the title.

The current lineup is below.

The well-traveled Murilo "Ninja" Rua, the older brother of UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio RIFT Platinum "Shogun," will head to the U.K. next to challenge British prospect Tom Watson for the BAMMA middleweight belt at BAMMA 6.

BAMMA announced Wednesday the main event for its May 21 card in London, rift gold which follows up last month's outing featuring Strikeforce No. 1 welterweight contender Paul Daley scoring a first-round knockout over DEEP champ Yuya Shirai.

Rua (20-11-1) is coming off a loss to Roy Boughton at a W-1 event in Canada last October, RIFT Platinum but prior to the Boughton fight, recorded finishes against his last four opponents. Rua might be best known for winning the first EliteXC middleweight title when he earned a second-round stoppage over Joey Villasenor in June 2007.

Watson (13-4) has only lost one fight in the last three years. He competed last September at BAMMA 4 and defeated fighter-turned-reality television star Alex Reid after five rounds.
Rift Gold Two weeks before the Reid fight, Watson made a trip to Canada and lost to Jesse Taylor at MFC 26. Watson captured the BAMMA title with a win over Matt Horwich in May 2010.
Where do your groceries come from? If you're one of the 23.5 million Americans,
Rift Gold inclusive of 6.5 million children, who live more than one mile from a supermarket, your shelves might be stocked with food from the local convenience store. These "food deserts" impede access to healthy, affordable foods, such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains -- a key part in fighting the childhood obesity epidemic.

"It's impossible to make [healthy] changes if you have to get in a cab or bus or walk for miles to get a head of lettuce," First Lady Michelle Obama told AOL Health readers during her first-ever live web chat Tuesday.

Obama spoke with AOL Health to promote the newly redesigned "Let's Move!" website. RIFT Platinum The first lady launched the Let's Move! effort in February to bring together parents, schools and businesses to combat the growing childhood obesity epidemic. Currently, about 1 out of every 3 U.S. children is overweight or obese.

In February, the first lady put her Let's Move! rift gold campaign into action when she traveled to Philadelphia -- once labeled America's most obese city -- by announcing more than $400 million in federal assistance to help eliminate food deserts. By bringing grocery stores to underserved communities, residents will have better access to cheaper, healthier food options without having to travel or resort to convenience stores or fast food establishments.

The Fresh Grocer, a local supermarket now in the Philadelphia neighborhood Mrs. Obama visited back in February, is now the community's "shining star," the first lady told AOL Health. RIFT Platinum "The produce matches any high-priced grocery store in the country, and the store is turning a profit," she said. "If they can do it in Philadelphia with its rural and urban communities, they can do it anywhere."

Radiation Therapy

Radiation oncology is the discipline of human medicine focused on generation, conservation, and dissemination of knowledge concerning etiology, prevention, rift gold and treatment of cancer and some benign diseases involving special expertise in the therapeutic applications of ionizing irradiation (Smith and McKenna, 2004). It addresses the therapeutic uses of ionizing irradiation given either alone or in combination with other treatment modalities, such as surgery or chemotherapy. Radiation oncology also includes investigation of basic principles of tumor biology, the biologic interaction of irradiation with tissues, normal or malignant, as well as the physical principles of therapeutic irradiation. As a medical profession, radiation oncology involves patient care, scientific research, and education of professionals within the discipline. Radiation therapy is a clinical modality dealing with the use of ionizing irradiation in the treatment of patients with cancer and occasionally benign disease (Smith and McKenna, 2004). Its aim is to deliver a precisely measured irradiation dose to a defined tumor volume with as minimal damage as possible to surrounding healthy tissue, thus resulting in tumor eradication, improved quality of life, and prolonged survival. Indications for radiation therapy include cases in which it can improve either local control, hence overall survival, or ameliorate symptoms of the disease.

The aim of therapeutic irradiation can be either curative or palliative (Price and Sikora, 2005). The aim of curative radiation therapy is to eradicate the tumor and cure the patient, in cases in which the patient is willing to accept a small risk of significant adverse events in return for the possibility of cure. Palliative radiation therapy has the aim of either ameliorating the symptoms of the disease or preventing it to increase the quality of life without a significant risk of serious adverse events. Specific issues of radiation oncology are the volume, techniques, and the dose (Halperin et al., 2004). Although the appropriate volume to be irradiated needs to be specified for achieving the desired goal, the appropriate technique to irradiate a specified volume of tissue must also be taken into account. There are two techniques: teletherapy, using either distant-positioned focal source of cobalt-60 machines or linear accelerators as external beam treatment machines, and brachytherapy, with various radioactive isotopes that could be used interstitially, intracavitary, or intraluminally, or as molds. Although teletherapy remains the standard technique for the majority of patients, there is an increasing interest in the use of novel brachytherapy applications in tumors such as prostate cancer. Finally, the irradiation dose must be chosen by taking into account total dose, total number of fractions, number of fractions per day, irradiation dose per fraction, rift gold and the overall treatment time. Choice of irradiation dose is therefore a complex issue encompassing treatment goals, volumes, and techniques, as well as knowledge of radiobiology, such as the dose–response relationship for a particular tumor type and normal tissue tolerance.

Quarantine

Quarantine may be defined as the restraint or segregation of human beings or other living creatures, who may have come, either potentially or actually, into contact with transmissible pathologies, until the moment when it is considered certain that they no longer constitute a health risk. The term and the concept of quarantine are profoundly rooted in culture and world health procedures, and have periodically recalled peak interest in the course of epidemics. In the past the concept of quarantine was used to refer to the period of isolation of people alone, whereas in more recent times it has come to be applied to animals and things as well (Gensini et al., 2004). Quarantine has been implemented in many different ways in the course ofWestern history, undergoing periods in which it was highly considered and periods in which it was relatively neglected. In Europe and North America, during the last decades of the twentieth century, quarantine was substantially underrated, rift gold given that the spectacular achievements of modern medicine, from effective vaccines to powerful antibiotics, generated, in the general public but sometimes in health systems and operators too, the false impression that the battle against infectious diseases could be considered won. The recent, worldwide realities of ‘new’ transmissible pathologies, including the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the avian influenza, have provided evidence of the fact that human beings are still engaged in a struggle against pathogen agents. These communicable diseases have determined a boost in the popularity of quarantine: in the United States, because of the avian influenza, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has opened many new control stations at the border points in which there is a higher influx of people (Mafart and Perret, 2003).

The history of quarantine paradoxically indicates that people do not learn enough from history itself. Recent surveys conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveal that if avian influenza were to expand through the United States, the mandatory cooperation of U.S. citizens would be low, if not very low. Furthermore, in the case of an epidemiological emergency, the collaboration of the majority of the population in health measures planned by the government would be limited, largely because the majority of the interviewed people did not know what quarantine is,rift gold what it is for, and what it exactly entails. Reviewing quarantine from a historical-didactic perspective therefore constitutes a notable formative opportunity to illustrate an ever-pertinent health measure, whose general potentialities and limits of application must be precisely understood not only by health administrators, medical historians, and technical operators, but also by the general public.

Public Health Professionals

Broadly speaking, public health professionals are all those individualswho practice public health principles and methods in diverse areas such as program management, policy development, research, and surveillance. A recent Institute of Medicine study on educating public health professionals for the twenty-first century defines a public health Professional as ‘‘a person educated in public health or a related discipline who is employed to improve health through a population focus’’ (Institute of Medicine, 2003: 30). The scope of work of public health professionals is large, rift gold and to some extent, not very strictly defined. Public health professionals may primarily focus on individual risk factors of disease and health conditions. Alternately, they may focus on social, environmental, and economic factors influencing health, such as income, education, housing, and so on. Another angle of addressing public health can be making the political landscape more committed to improving health of populations through appropriate policy development and advocacy. Finally, public health professionals can be primarily engaged in research – academic and operational – to build the evidence base for appropriate interventions and policies.

Public health professionals form an important part of the health workforce, together with clinical practitioners and other health professionals. The field of public health practice exists inmost countries, although in different forms, and is developed to varying degrees. In countries such as the United States, UK, Australia, and Canada, the profession is well developed and widely recognized. In others, mostly developing countries of Asia and Africa, rift gold the profession is still struggling to establish an identity separate from and of equivalent standing as clinical medicine.

Consequences of Childhood Obesity

Children who are overweight are being diagnosed with diseases traditionally seen only in the adult population. These adult diseases are being diagnosed in children at an alarming rate and include high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, asthma, and sleep apnea. The consequences of obesity seem to be the same regardless of age. Research is indicating that more than half of overweight children have at least one risk factor for heart disease. The chronic conditions that children are dealing with can greatly affect their health as adults and their long-term mortality. As many as 80% of obese adults report being overweight as children. The longterm impact of childhood obesity is one that affects children not only physically but also mentally. The number of children who are discriminated against or bullied by their peers because of their weight is growing. Overweight children are often ostracized by their peers for their weight, and the resulting stress can negatively affect their self-esteem, academics, rift gold and social skills. For some children, verbal abuse by their peers leads to an increase in eating as a coping strategy for the stress, which worsens the existing weight problem. The resulting decrease in self-esteem caused by the bullying and the excess overeating can place overweight children at a higher risk for anxiety and depression. The anxiety of knowing that they might be made fun of while at school can affect their ability to focus and perform well in the classroom. The cumulative psychological effect can be and is great for some children, creating a cycle of despair. The bullying, increased eating, and emotional turmoil place an undue amount of stress on a body that is already physically stressed out. The emotional stress can have physical consequences, raising blood pressure and blood sugar levels, rift gold and causing stomach and head complaints. The emotional scars tend to be the hardest to heal, but emotional and medical support are widely available to treat the mental and physical consequences of childhood obesity.

A Picture Of Javier Martin's Sailboat the "Twyla" On The Bottom Near Chichime

February 20 2011

This afternoon a member of the boating community who was in the area of the island of Chichimé, in the San Blas, Kuna Yala area of the Caribbean coast of Panama, sent me this photo of Javier Martin's sailboat the "Twyla" which is now resting on the bottom. Javier Martin sailed his boat into a reef on the afternoon of 8 December 2010. He had tried to depart for Colombia with eleven backpackers aboard in the middle of the worst storm to hit the area in 300 years. The weather forced him to return, and as he approached Chichimé he "totally missed the turn"rift gold and drove his sailboat into the reef, ripping a hole in the hull, causing it to sink. When detectives from Panama's Directorate of Judicial Investigation (DIJ) and prosecutors from the Public Ministry inspected two tents that had been rented by Javier Martin from Humberto on Chichimé island, they found a whole stack of documents and records that supposedly pertain to the "Twyla" - but guess what? The boat was not registered in Javier Martin's name, there was another owner listed, and there were no records of a sail or transfer to Javier Martin. My gut tells me that somewhere on an island in the Caribbean some thirteen years ago, someone hired a younger Javier Martin as a deck hand to help them get from point A to point B, and along the way Javier Martin killed the true owners and took over the boat. He changed the name of the vessel, proclaimed himself as the true owner, rift gold and started making money hauling backpackers, and he's been at it ever since. Now it's going to be a task to go back in time, research the history of that boat, find out if anyone went missing at sea or whatever, and solve a thirteen year old cold case. Sound familiar? Remember Jeff Kline in Costa Rica? No body knew that William Dathan Holbert had committed a string of murders in Costa Rica before he arrived in Panama to do the same thing, until I went back and solved that one. This looks more and more like a replay, unfortunately. Javier Martin sunk his boat so he needed a replacement. And, he just went about doing the same thing he did the first time - kill the owners, take their boats and possessions, and leave. However this time he got caught before he could get away.
Nick Diaz vs. Paul Daley, Rift Gold the most anticipated welterweight title fight in Strikeforce history, is officially happening on April 9.

Diaz's manager and trainer, Cesar Gracie, confirmed with MMA Fighting that the British slugger signed the bout agreement on Tuesday, thus ending speculation that "Semtex" would pull out of the fight.

Diaz vs. Daley had already been announced by the promotion, but after Zuffa purchased Strikeforce two weeks ago, RIFT Platinum Daley hinted online that he may back out of the title fight given his previous relationship with UFC president Dana White.

"Business as usual," Daley wrote on the Underground forum, "what if I don't want to fight for Dana White/Zuffa?"

He added:

"Dana white bans me for life from the UFC, Then buys STRIKEFORCE, and thinks im still gonna be EASY and fight on one of the most anticipated fights of the year (vs Diaz)? Which will no doubt make ZUFFA/Dana White money.

"Daley vs Diaz still on?.....Someone better holla at my manager real quick."

Even though White banned Daley from the UFC after Daley punched Koscheck after the bell at UFC 113, rift gold the UFC president has said that he will honor Daley's existing contract with Strikeforce despite his feelings towards "Semtex."

When asked at the UFC 128 post-fight press conference about Daley's involvement on the April 9 card in San Diego, RIFT Platinum White didn't seem worried about his threat to pull out of the title fight.

"Paul Daley has a contract, so it would be a good idea if he did [sign the bout agreement]," White said with a smirk.
What a game! rift gold After a dramatic 9th inning comeback in which the Jays tied the score by scoring two runs on Mariano Rivera but couldn't win the game, Travis Snider doubled home Edwin Encarnacion from first base with 2 outs in the 10th inning. Wow. After a rough 4-game series in Boston and a pretty bad first 8 innings of this one, I'm hoping the conclusion can shake the Jays up a bit.

On the Mound:

Kyle Drabek has been walking too many all season, but he had enough strikeouts, grounders, and luck to get away with it until today. Drabek gave away 4 free passes (and one hit-by-pitch) and proved unable to overcome that today. On the other hand, Drabek did show good stuff and at times wasn't missing the strike zone by much. Rift Gold It comes at a bad time given the team's recent skid, but I think you have to give Drabek a pass for now and be patient while he figures out how to get ahead of batters and not to put runners on base. Still, the 19/15 K/BB ratio he is currently sporting is anything but pretty and, while it'd be great to see a switch just flip sometime soon, it's more likely that it'll be a process.

At the Plate:

For the first 8 innings, It was an improvement over prior games, but that's not saying much. Jose Bautista hit a home run in the first, and Edwin Encarnacion had a very nice game at the plate. The Jays did take a lot of walks, which was good, but one wonders whether that says more about A.J. Burnett's poor control than the Jays' fine plate discipline. RIFT Platinum Aaron Hill singled and stole second but strained his hamstring sliding headfirst into second and is day-to-day. It doesn't sound like such a bad injury, but substituting McDonald for Hill doesn't really help an already-depleted Jays' lineup, though more on that in a moment.

It was down 5-3, with Mariano Rivera on the mound, that everything came alive for the Jays. Yunel Escobar, who had been having an awful game at the plate, led off. Rivera missed his spot and got too much of the plate and Escobar made him pay by smashing one over centerfielder Curtis Granderson's head to put the tying run at the plate. Travis Snider grounded out on the first pitch, but Rivera wanted no piece of Jose Bautista. Rivera was so dedicated to keeping the ball off the plate that he threw ball four away, allowing Escobar, who had moved to third on Snider's groundout, to score. Adam Lind came to the plate against one of the toughest all-time pitchers against lefties. Rivera got Lind down 0-2 but Lind hung in there and punched a line-drive into right-center to put the Jays within one with the tying run at third. rift gold John Farrell called the squeeze and McDonald, who entered the game for Aaron Hill, managed to get the ball down in a perfectly-executed play. Jose Molina loaded the bases with a groundball single to give the Jays a great chance to walk off, but Corey Patterson grounded into a double play to end the threat.

In the 10th, Edwin Encarnacion led off with a ground ball single against Ivan Nova. Both Jayson Nix and Yunel Escobar hit the ball hard, but both were pulled down by Yankee outfielders out near the wall, bringing up Travis Snider. Snider at that point was 0-5 with three strikeouts, including one where he angrily smashed his bat over his knee after the fact - it was just one of those days. RIFT Platinum That is, until the 10th, when he drove a low fastball into the right-centerfield gap and it one hopped the wall, giving Edwin Encarnacion time to come all the way around from first. Snider looked as relieved as happy, and awesome walkoff-ness ensued. Go Jays!
Talking on a cell phone for close to an hour has an impact on brain activity, according to the latest research on the subject -- but the long-term health effects remain unclear.

A preliminary study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that using the cell for 50 minutes was associated with a spike in brain glucose metabolism, which is a marker for brain activity.

The increased glucose metabolism happened in the area of the brain closest to the phone antenna, said scientists from the National Institutes of Health.

What the results mean from a health standpoint isn't yet known.

The findings are the latest in a growing and conflicting body of research on the mobile phones' potential link to cancer. Concerns have long surrounded the possible carcinogenic effects of the radiation emitted from the phones. Those waves are known as radiofrequency-modulated electromagnetic fields, or RF-EMFs.

"It's not the smoking gun," Dr. Michael DeGeorgia, a neurologist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Ohio, told AOL Health of the study. "It's not the final link to brain tumors. But it certainly raises provocative questions."

The authors emphasized that their research only goes so far in what it shows.

"Results of this study provide evidence that acute cell phone exposure affects brain metabolic activity," they wrote. "However, these results provide no information as to their relevance regarding potential carcinogenic effects [or lack of such effects] from chronic cell phone use."

The brain uses glucose for energy; how quickly it breaks down or metabolizes that glucose is an indication of how hard it is working to get that energy, explained DeGeorgia, who heads the neurocritical care center at University Hospitals.

"That can put a strain on the cells," he told AOL Health.

When cells are injured, they can either die or experience a genetic change that makes them multiply, turning on the genes that cause the cells to proliferate and turning off those that inhibit the process. That process may cause tumors to form.

"Cancer is the abnormal proliferation and growth of cells," DeGeorgia said. "One fear is that these radiofrequency waves may be stressing out the cells, may be pushing the cells over the edge. The radiofrequency from the phone can perhaps cause the genes to turn on and off."

Led by Dr. Nora D. Volkow of the NIH, the research team conducted the randomized clinical study on 47 participants between January 1 and December 31 of 2009. RIFT Platinum Cell phones were held up to both the left and right ears, while high-tech PET scans were taken of the brain and its glucose metabolism was measured. The brain's activity was monitored once when the right-ear phone was on for 50 minutes and once with both phones off.

The scientists saw no difference in the glucose metabolism of the entire brain when the phones were on versus off. rift gold But they did detect a localized effect in the region closest to the antenna: Metabolism there was about 7 percent higher when the phones were activated than when they were deactivated.

"This indicates that the regions expected to have the greater absorption of RF-EMFs from the cell phone exposure were the ones that showed the larger increases in glucose metabolism," the researchers wrote. Rift Gold "These results provide evidence that the human brain is sensitive to the effects of RF-EMFs from acute cell phone exposures."

What isn't known is how the radiation waves affect glucose metabolism in the brain, RIFT Platinum or what the potential health consequences may be.

More epidemiological trials are needed to "shed light on whether excessive cell phone use is dangerous," Dr. Steven V. Pacia, the chief of neurology at Lenox Hill Hospital, said in an e-mail to AOL Health.

"If it is true that brain metabolism increases only in regions exposed to the cell phone's RF-EMF emissions, rift gold then it is clear that cell phones produce biological effects unrelated to normal function," he said.

The NIH scientists agree, saying more work is needed to determine whether the devices can cause long-term harm.

"Studies of the association between cell phone use and prevalence of brain tumors have been inconsistent [some, but not all showed increased risk], and the issue remains unresolved," they wrote.

DeGeorgia said the findings don't prove a definitive association between mobile phone use and cancer. But they are significant.

"It's an illustration that radiofrequency waves are having a measurable, functional difference in the brain," he told AOL Health. RIFT Platinum "It's not a link to cancer -- they're not showing that they change the genes and cells. But it certainly shows that when you have your cell phone to your ear, your brain cells are being affected by it."

Until more is known, caution should be exercised, he added.

"Use common sense," he suggested. Rift Gold "If there's a way to avoid having the cell phone directly to your ear, do it, and limit the use of cell phones until all the data is in."

People whose painkiller of choice is ibuprofen may be at a lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease than those who don't take the drug, new research suggests.

A study looking at more than 136,000 Americans found that the more ibuprofen tablets they took every week, the less of a chance they had of getting the debilitating disorder, which causes the degeneration of brain cells that control motor skills.

The same effect observed with ibuprofen, sold under the brand name Advil or Motrin in the U.S., rift gold didn't manifest itself with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin (Bufferin), acetaminophen (Tylenol), and naproxen (Aleve), according to the findings.

Previous research has shown that regularly taking any NSAID seems to slow or stop the onset of Parkinson's, according to Dr. Michael Pourfar, the director of the division of movement disorders at North Shore-LIJ Health System in Great Neck, N.Y.

"What is interesting about this particular study is that the benefit appeared limited to ibuprofen and was not apparent with other NSAIDs," Pourfar said in an e-mail to AOL Health. RIFT Platinum "This raises the question as to whether any potential benefit relates to ibuprofen's anti-inflammatory activity or another mechanism of action."

But that doesn't mean that ibuprofen should be taken to stave off Parkinson's.

"It is important to note that this finding, while intriguing, not does indicate that ibuprofen protects individuals from getting Parkinson's," Pourfar said. "It also does not mean that taking ibuprofen once one has developed Parkinson's will have any impact on disease progression."

Lead researcher Dr. Xiang Gao of Harvard Medical School issued a similar warning about the limitations of his observational study. Gao said it does not prove a causal link between taking ibuprofen and avoiding Parkinson's, which typically crops up later in life and causes trembling and other movement problems that get progressively worse over time.

"It's too early to recommend use of ibuprofen to prevent or treat Parkinson's disease," Gao told Reuters Health in an e-mail. RIFT Platinum But, he added, his findings pave the way for clinical, randomized trials on whether Advil or Motrin can delay development of the disease.

The research, published online March 2 in Neurology, looked at questionnaires given to participants beginning in 1998 and 2000 about their use of over-the-counter painkillers. During the subsequent six years, about two in 1,000 of those studied were diagnosed with Parkinson's, Reuters said.

Gao and his colleagues learned that participants who took ibuprofen at least two times a week had a 38 percent lower risk of developing the illness than those who didn't take the drug. rift gold They accounted for other possible contributing factors like alcohol use, smoking, age and weight.

They also found that the chance of Parkinson's seemed to drop further the more of the pills they took. Rift Gold Subjects who reported taking six or more ibuprofen tablets a week had the lowest odds of getting Parkinson's compared with those who didn't take any of the painkillers at all.

Only 10 of the participants who got the disease were taking six or more ibuprofen tablets a week; just 13 were taking between one and five.

"One possible explanation is that ibuprofen does protect against Parkinson's disease," Dr. James H. Bower, RIFT Platinum a Mayo Clinic neurologist who wrote an accompanying editorial, told Reuters. "That's what everyone would hope -- that would be very exciting. But we're not there yet."

But frequent ibuprofen use is not without its own problems. The drug can cause stomach upset and bleeding, as well as kidney damage.

The Harvard researchers theorize that the link may exist because ibuprofen does something other NSAIDs don't: work on a cell receptor called PPAR-gamma, rift gold which some animal studies suggest may be linked to Parkinson's.

About a million people in the U.S. suffer from Parkinson's, but the disease and its causes have remained largely a mystery.

The condition involves the slow deterioration of cells that produce dopamine in the brain and comes with life-altering symptoms including balance and movement difficulty, tremors and acute stiffness.

The actor Michael J. Fox has Parkinson's and has helped raise awareness about and funding for the disease through a foundation he established.

Scientists believe that Parkinson's may have genetic and environmental roots. RIFT Platinum Prior studies have linked risk of the disease to pesticides and other toxins.
More than a third of U.S. adults sleep less than seven hours a night, RIFT Platinum and many of them report troubles concentrating, remembering and even driving.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the statistics Thursday in two separate studies.

In one study, about 35 percent of people surveyed in 12 states said they slept less than seven hours a night, on average.

The second study based on a national survey found about 23 percent said they had trouble concentrating because they were tired. Rift Gold Another 18 percent struggled to remember things, and 11 percent had difficulty driving or commuting.

Furthermore, 48 percent of respondents reported snoring, 37.9 percent said admitted to unintentionally falling asleep during the day, and, RIFT Platinum more disturbingly, 4.7 percent reported nodding off or falling asleep while driving in the 30 days preceding the study.

The CDC said a multifaceted approach that includes increased public awareness and education and training in sleep medicine for health-care professionals is needed to combat the problem of sleeplessness. rift gold The agency recommended looking at how technology use and work policies affect sleep.

Just one week after Jon Fitch pulled out of his UFC 132 rematch with BJ Penn, leaving the UFC looking for a new opponent for the Hawaiian great, RIFT Platinum Penn has now been forced out of the event as well.

The UFC has officially confirmed Penn's withdrawal to MMA Fighting. rift gold The possibilty was first reported by MMAJunkie.com.

Penn and Fitch both agreed to a rematch shortly after their UFC 127 main event fight in Australia finished in a draw.

The fight, though, never came close to coming off.

First, Fitch was forced out due to a shoulder injury, and while a few welterweights including Carlos Condit and Anthony Johnson voiced an interest in replacing him, now an undisclosed injury has also sidelined Penn. RIFT Platinum It remains unclear if the UFC will try to set up the rematch when both are medically clear.

UFC 132 takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 2. In the main event, Rift Gold bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz returns from a hand injury to defend his belt against longtime rival and No. 1 contender Urijah Faber.
When you have to go, it's usually all you can think about. Rift Gold But a surprising new study finds that a full bladder may actually be linked to better decision-making.

Researchers at the University of Twente in the Netherlands studied more than 500 college students to see whether signals the brain sends to a full bladder to go to the bathroom would "leak" into other inhibitory response systems, according to Reuters.

One group of participants had to drink five cups of water; the other had to only take a small sip from each of the five cups. After 40 minutes passed, RIFT Platinum the time it takes for water to get into the bladder, all the students had to take a test asking them to make choices.

Lead author Mirjam Tuk told Reuters that the subjects were asked to decide between a small monetary reward they'd receive right away and a larger sum they'd have to wait to get -- $18 tomorrow or $30 in 25 days.

"The number of times respondents opted for a later but larger reward was higher for people who experienced high bladder pressure," she said.

The participants also performed other exercises suggesting that those with full bladders had better impulse control.

"These findings seem to suggest that people possess a general inhibition system," Tuk wrote in the Psychological Science study. rift gold "The inhibition of various behaviors [motor and cognitive] seems to have its origin in the same neural area. Once inhibitory signals are sent, they are not completely bound to the focal task requiring inhibition, but spill over to other domains."

Urologist Dr. Sherman Silber said the research should be placed in the proper context.

"It does NOT mean that having a full bladder allows you to make better decisions," RIFT Platinum he told AOL Health. "Holding your urine intentionally will not in any way improve your judgment or performance."

But, he added, it could shed light on a potential link between personality type and frequency of trips to the bathroom.

"There could be a very interesting correlation between people who are infrequent voiders being more busy and more intense about their work and projects than those who are more frequent voiders," Silber said. Rift Gold"It would be an issue of just how well they can inhibit immediate urges to accomplish long-term better results."

Though she admits that she may be generalizing, RIFT Platinum Tuk suggests drinking a lot of water before making an important financial decision.

"People might be more likely to invest money in retirement funds instead of spending it on more short-term benefits, for example," rift gold she told Reuters. "Any type of financial decision-making might benefit from increased bladder control."

The much-delayed fight between Jorge Rivera and Alessio Sakara is finally going to happen at UFC 133.

"Better late than never, verbal agreements are in for what should be an action-packed match between Alessio Sakara and Jorge Rivera at UFC 133," Rift Gold UFC President Dana White said in the promotion's announcement.

UFC 133 hasn't been formally announced, but it's expected to take place on August 6 at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.RIFT Platinum

The fight is now scheduled to take place nearly a year after it was first supposed to happen. Rivera and Sakara initially agreed to fight each other at UFC 118 in August of 2010, but it was scrapped when Rivera pulled out with an injury. rift goldSakara was at first going to stay on that card, but he later pulled out of UFC 118 with an injury of his own.

With both fighters then looking for an autumn fight, Rivera and Sakara then agreed to fight each other at UFC 122 in Germany, but Sakara pulled out on the day of the fight with an illness.

Unfortunately, it's a less interesting fight now than it was before, as Rivera and Sakara were both on three-fight winning streaks when the fight was originally announced, RIFT Platinum but are now both on one-fight losing streaks. Still, Rivera-Sakara should be an entertaining scrap. As White said, better late than never.
