Death toll in Philippine landslides rises

MANILA, Philippines — Officials say the death toll from landslides in the southern Philippines has risen to five after the discovery of two children's bodies. Office of Civil Defense chief Benito Ramos said Tuesday at least three people were killed and eight remain missing near Valencia city in southern Bukidnon province after soil and rocks loosened by days of heavy rain rolled down on a highway.Officials said the bodies of a 7-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy were found under a second landslide Monday in Valencia's mountainous Tongan-Tongan village.Ramos said a third landslide Tuesday in Valencia's Malayanan village buried at least two houses, but it was unclear if there were casualties.Ramos blamed the landslides on deforestation.
